On July 18, 2024, Prosemino celebrated the opening of its Climate Tech labs in Canada Water, London, a milestone that underscored the company’s commitment to innovation in the pursuit of a sustainable future. This facility is more than just a hub for climate technology startups—it represents a significant stride in the global effort to achieve net-zero goals.
The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including founders, investors, academic leaders, government representatives, and other stakeholders committed to sustainability. Keynote speeches set an inspiring tone for the evening, with leaders in the sustainability sector sharing insights on the critical role of innovation in the net-zero transition. Among the speakers was Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, who highlighted the urgency of the moment by stating, "We need to double down” on sustainability.
The opening of these labs is a testament to Prosemino's commitment to fostering innovation in the climate tech sector. Located in the Paper Yard, a space developed by British Land, these labs are designed to support startups that are driving the transition to a net-zero economy. Prosemino's new space includes a mix of wet and dry labs, office spaces, and shared amenities, all of which are tailored to meet the needs of climate tech innovators. In these labs, startups have the ability to synthesise, characterise and test their materials and technologies with a range of specialised equipment. As Professor Chris Howard, co-founder and director of Prosemino, emphasised, “the new lab space will allow the company to engage in more complex and diverse projects, particularly those involving advanced electrochemical processes.”
Prosemino’s unique venture builder model is central to its mission of accelerating the development of net-zero technologies. Prosemino collaborates with entrepreneurs to co-found startups, offering them pre-seed capital in exchange for equity. This partnership provides these startups with comprehensive support, including strategic guidance, mentorship, and access to state-of-the-art facilities. This approach is strengthened by Prosemino’s team of PhDs and legal and financial experts, who bring the necessary scientific and business expertise. Together, this ensures that innovative ideas can rapidly evolve into scalable solutions that address the global climate crisis.
The opening of these labs is a critical development in the landscape of climate tech in the UK. This initiative is part of a larger movement to accelerate the deployment of hard-technologies that are essential for achieving net-zero targets. The labs will serve as a launchpad for innovative startups that are developing solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
Prosemino has created over 40 green jobs across their team and portfolio companies, and hopes to create many more with the opening of this space, contributing to the local economy and supporting London’s broader sustainability goals. The facility’s modular design also offers flexibility, enabling Prosemino to adapt its space to accommodate the evolving needs of the startups it supports.
The opening of these labs is aligned with the wider Canada Water Masterplan, which aims to create a dynamic, sustainable community of innovators and thought leaders. This proximity to other leading institutions and research centres is expected to nurture collaboration and drive further advancements in decarbonisation. This new facility positions Prosemino at the forefront of this movement, not only in the UK but globally, as the company continues to pioneer technologies that will be crucial in achieving the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The event was not just a celebration of a new building but a powerful reminder of the collective effort required to tackle the challenges of climate change. Through innovation, collaboration, and a relentless focus on sustainability, Prosemino is positioned to make a lasting impact—one startup at a time.
